As a new mom, it’s completely normal to question everything especially when your baby seems uncomfortable. From latching concerns to feeding frequency, there’s already so much to navigate. Then your baby spits up, seems gassy, cries after feeds, or develops a rash and suddenly you’re wondering:

Was it something I ate? The milk in my coffee? Something spicy at dinner?

Many parents searching for answers about colic, reflux, gas, or eczema in breastfed babies begin asking this exact question.

And in some cases, there may be a connection.

Understanding how breast milk is made and how babies respond to certain nutrients can help explain why some infants experience digestive discomfort or sensitivity symptoms.

How Breast Milk Is Made

A common misconception is that food you eat goes directly into your breast milk exactly as it was consumed. That’s not quite how the body works.

When you eat, your body digests food into nutrients such as proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. These nutrients enter your bloodstream. Breast milk is then produced in the mammary glands using those nutrients.

Breast milk contains an incredible combination of components designed to nourish and protect your baby, including:

  • Proteins

  • Healthy fats

  • Vitamins and minerals

  • Antibodies and immune factors

  • Hormones and growth factors

Your body carefully regulates what reaches your baby, but small amounts of certain food proteins and nutrients can pass through breast milk.

For most babies, this causes no issues at all. However, some infants have developing immune or nervous systems that may be more sensitive to certain substances.

Why Some Breastfed Babies Experience Colic, Gas, or Reflux

Many babies experience symptoms such as:

  • Baby colic

  • Gassiness after feeding

  • Infant reflux or spit-up

  • Fussiness during or after feeding

  • Skin rashes or eczema

  • Irregular bowel movements

Often these symptoms are simply part of a baby’s developing digestive system. Infants are still building their gut microbiome, digestive enzymes, and immune responses.

However, in some babies, the body may react to specific nutrients, proteins, vitamins, or minerals present in breast milk.

This does not mean the mother has done anything wrong.

Every baby’s system is unique, and some babies are simply more sensitive than others.

Food Proteins That May Affect Sensitive Breastfed Babies

Research shows that certain food proteins can pass into breast milk and occasionally trigger symptoms in sensitive infants.

Some common examples include:

  • Dairy

  • Soy

  • Eggs

  • Wheat

  • Peanuts or tree nuts

Dairy protein is the most commonly reported trigger in babies experiencing digestive discomfort.

However, in holistic allergy care we also recognize that some babies may react to other nutrients present in breast milk, including certain vitamins, minerals, or proteins.

When a baby is sensitive to one of these substances, symptoms may include:

  • Excessive crying or colic

  • Reflux or frequent spit-up

  • Gas and abdominal discomfort

  • Green or mucousy stools

  • Skin irritation or eczema

  • Sleep disturbances

These symptoms can be exhausting for parents, especially when they continue despite eliminating foods from the mother’s diet.

.Food Allergy vs Food Sensitivity in Babies

It’s helpful to understand the difference between food allergies and food sensitivities.

Food Allergy

A food allergy involves a strong immune response and can produce severe symptoms.

Food Sensitivity or Intolerance

A food sensitivity is usually more subtle but can still cause symptoms such as:

  • Colic

  • Gas

  • Reflux

  • Digestive discomfort

  • Skin irritation

  • Restlessness or sleep issues

True food allergies in breastfed babies affect about 2–3% of infants, but sensitivities can be more common.

A Holistic Approach to Baby Colic, Reflux, and Digestive Discomfort

In my practice, I frequently work with babies experiencing:

  • Chronic infant reflux

  • Persistent colic

  • Eczema flare-ups

  • Excessive gas or digestive discomfort

While pediatric medical care is always important, many parents are surprised to learn that sensitivities affecting the nervous system and immune response may also play a role.

This is where a holistic approach such as NAET (Nambudripad Allergy Elimination Technique) may offer additional support.

How NAET May Help Sensitive Babies

NAET is a gentle, non-invasive technique designed to help the body respond more calmly to specific substances that may be triggering sensitivity reactions.

Using muscle response testing, practitioners identify substances that may be stressing the body which can include certain foods or environmental factors.

Acupressure is then used to help support the nervous system and reduce the body’s overreaction to those substances.

The initial protocol involves vital vitamins and nutrients the components of the breast milk, formula, or early foods.

In many cases, babies who experience symptoms such as reflux, digestive discomfort, colic, eczema, or excessive gassiness respond very well when these sensitivities are addressed.

The goal is not to restrict a mother’s diet unnecessarily, but rather to help the baby’s system become more balanced and less reactive.

When to Speak to Your Pediatrician

If your baby experiences any of the following symptoms, it is important to consult your pediatrician:

  • Blood in the stool

  • Severe vomiting or diarrhea

  • Breathing difficulties

  • Poor weight gain

Medical evaluation is essential in these situations.

For more common concerns such as baby colic, reflux, gassiness, or eczema, a broader approach that considers sensitivities and nervous system balance may also be helpful.
